Pittsburgh Steelers 2023 Draft Recap
With the NFL Draft approaching. The Pittsburgh Steelers need to make some moves to put themselves into contention with; the rest of their division, the conference, and for a title. This offseason, the Steelers have by far exceeded most expectations. With pickups like Russel Wilson, Justin Fields, Patrick Queen, Van Jefferson, Donte Jackson and Cordarelle Patterson, a solid draft could land the Steelers in the true contender category. As opposed to their typical 9-8 first round exits.
Before we get into this year's predictions let's look at the track record of correct and incorrect predictions from last year.
Pick 14 - OT Broderick Jones
Prediction - Trade to Pick 9 - OT Paris Johnston
This was a “gimmie”. It was going to be one of these scenarios for the Steelers. An OT was needed just like this year. Broderick Jones excelled at OT, starting 11 of 17 games for Pittsburgh.
Pick 32 - CB Joey Porter Jr.
Prediction - CB DJ Turner
Another “gimmie” for the Steelers. With that mock trade, they get DJ Turner. Instead, no trade, and we come home with Joey Porter Jr. And I dont think a single Steelers Fan was upset come the end of 2023 with this pick. With one interception and only allowing a 47% completion percentage under his coverage, and only a 70.1 Passer Rating allowed. A huge asset in getting the Steelers passing defense to the next level.
Pick 49 - DT Keeanu Benton
Prediction - DT Gervon Dexter
The Steelers needed a DT. Benton provided a bit of pressure to the inside of the OL. Benton had 8 QB Hits but only 1 sack. Still a strong start for the rookie. The inner line for the Steelers has been heavily dependent on Cam Heyward. This may be the man going forward in terms of pressure.
Pick 93 - TE Darnell Washington
Prediction - LB Henry To’o To’o
Pulling in Washington appeared on paper to not be necessary, but Steelers brought in an additional TE to bring some competition. Washington didn’t bring much, only tallying 7 Receptions & 61 yards.
Pick 132 - LB Nick Herbig
Prediction - LB Nick Herbig
So far, we were almost perfect in positions. But this was our first lock in pick. The Steelers are a “family” team. Derek and T.J., multiple other family members playing together throughout the years. This was no different. Nick is brought in to play along his brother Nate, Alex Highsmith, and T.J. Watt. Knabbing 2 forced fumbles, 3 sacks, and 27 combined tackles.
Pick 241 - CB Corey Trice Jr.
Prediction - S Jason Taylor II
Going down with an injury in late August before the season began, Pittsburgh fans have been eagerly waiting to see what this pick will amount to. There is a lot of story left for Corey, hopefully 2024 he can come back and build a duo CB island.
Pick 251 - OL Spencer Anderson
Prediction - QB Clayton Tune
Clayton Tune was a crazy prediction. But Anderson comes in, only plays 74 total snaps (including special teams). On both offense and special teams, Anderson did not incur a single penalty which bodes well for his future. But still a limited sample size.
In Closing…
The Pittsburgh Steelers had arguably a top 10 draft last year. As well as a arguable top 5 performance this offseason. Losing Dionte Johnson will be a big test for Pickens and Austin III. However losing Chukwuma Okorafor, Mason Cole, and Kenny Pickett don't seem large, there are still holes to fill.
With the teams biggest needs still lying at OT, WR, C, and S. Be on the lookout for our full 7 round 2024 Mock Draft before the 25th, Draft day!
